What a nice surprise when I saw that Groupon was offering another deal for Jazzin’ at the Shedd Aquarium . We had such a blast last year (review here), that we decided to go here again for the Fourth of July.
Nitty Gritty: I was able to get the Groupon again this year for $18 for 2 adult tickets. Normally, Jazzin’ at the Shedd costs $18 an adult and $12 for children 3 to 11. We parked at a lot right by the Adler Planetarium hoping to cap off the night by viewing fireworks in our air-conditioned car. We were speechless when we saw that parking cost an outrageous $30!! I forgot to take into account the holiday and that we would get charged “Event” rates. The cashier accepted credit cards, but the sign said “Cash Only.” I would bring cash just in case they decide not to take credit.
The Fun: If you feel like moving and grooving to music in a beautiful and unique setting, then Jazzin’ at the Shedd is perfect for you. Every week there is a different jazz band that plays music while you peruse the many exhibits that the Shedd has to offer. Last year, they had the band situated by the Caribbean Reef, and this year they were moved to the lobby where tables were also set up. We much preferred last year’s location since we were able to view fish while listening to music. Since the band’s location is more removed from the center, it was hard to hear the music unless you were in the immediate vicinity. The best part about the Jazzin’ at the Shedd ticket? Access to everything in the museum – including the beautiful Wild Reef.
Since it was Fourth of July and the fireworks display was set to go off over the Pier, many people had the same thought that we did – we would enjoy the Shedd and then afterwards watch the fireworks display over the lake since there is a gorgeous view of Navy Pier from the Shedd.
Son’s favorite moment: Trying to “step” on the sting rays in the Wildlife exhibit.
Parent’s favorite moment: Viewing the colorful fish and sharks in the Wildlife exhibit.
Bottom Line: I can’t recommend the Shedd enough, especially Jazzin’ at the Shedd. Even though it was much busier this year, we still love coming to the Shedd especially after hours. We would definitely come here again, but definitely not on a holiday. We were a little bummed that it was more crowded than last year, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying ourselves.
