For as long as I can remember, I’ve heard that one thing you absolutely need to do is walk Lake Geneve’s Shore Path. So on our latest summer escape to Lake Geneva, I knew that’s what we needed to do! Since we were staying at The Cove with its awesome location (review coming) just a few feet away, it was so convenient to walk out the door for a morning run/stroll.
A little history according to a plaque I saw: “The 26-mile lakeside trail along the shore of Geneva Lake was used by several Indian cultures from 2500 BC and continuing up to 1836 AD. Chief Big Foot’s Potawatomi tribe walked the trail between their villages at present Fontana, Williams Bay and one at Lake Geneva located in this park. Later the trail became the workmen’s path from Lake Geneva to summer states of wealthy Chicago families.” I learned on my Lake Geneva Cruise Line’s Ice Cream Social boat tour that after the Great Chicago Fire the wealthy from Chicago flocked to Lake Geneva while their homes were being rebuilt. They chose Geneva Lake’s lake shore for their summer estates, and many of them still stand today. Neat, huh?
The entire path is more than 20 miles long, but anyone can just start at any point. On my walk/run, I visited the path on two separate occasions. Along the way, I saw amazing estates, mansions, houses. Just gorgeous! I was able to sneak a peek at their backyards.
Can you imagine the fun kids can have in this treehouse? Or the private beach?
Besides the homes and yards, I also noticed the path around the lake was not the same. I later found out that property owners are responsible for maintaining the path themselves. I think it adds to the uniqueness of the path.
Some owners also add extras like benches or artwork. Some even have water stations.
Tips to enjoy the Lake Shore Path:
- Don’t bring bikes! Remember, the path is not consistent throughout.
- Consider starting at the library. While you’re there scope out the architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright protegee.
If you have a chance to walk a portion of the Shore Path, I highly recommend it. So interesting and a great way to get some exercise.
